I’m not talking about Mase the rapper here, I am talking about the wonderful flavorful spice called Mace.  Have you heard of it? It’s a new spice to me that I don’t use a ton in my cooking, but after all of the research into this incredible spice I am definitely going to start integrating it more.  So, where does mace come from exactly? You’ve heard of nutmeg before right? Well, mace and nutmeg actually come from the same plant, Myristica fragrans. Nutmeg is the actual seed of the plant, while mace is the covering of the seed. While nutmeg has a ton of health benefits, let’s dive into mace powder learning the medicinal properties of this beautiful spice.  Here are 5 reasons why you need mace in your life:

  1. Aids Digestion
In a world where the Standard North American diet is “normal”, our digestive systems are being compromised.  Mace is used to treat a whole bunch of digestive issues such as indigestion, diarrhea, gas and nausea.
  1. Mood Booster
Today, many people are suffering from mood disorders.  Anxiety to depression to other mood issues, and more than ever we need natural remedies we can implement on a day-to-day basis.  Cleaning up our diets and lifestyles will have a huge impact. We can begin to introduce spices such as mace to boost mood and have us feeling our best selves. Mace has been shown to  alleviate anxiety and depression symptoms.
  1. Stress Buster
One of my favorite topics is stress! Why? Because we are a stressed out nation running from place to place, never taking a second to breathe.  We have to support our bodies in times of stress because of the hundreds of stress causing factors in our daily lives.  Mace is one of those spices that acts against stress.  It helps you feel calm and peaceful and helps relieve mental exhaustion.
  1. Supports Kidney Health
Mace helps protect our kidneys and stops painful kidney stones from developing in the body.  In Chinese and Indian medicine it is also used in the treatment of dissolving kidney stones.  Our kidneys are a vital organ that is imperative we keep healthy for longevity and protection against diseases and infections.
  1. Rich in Nutrients
Consuming more foods rich in nutrients is important for overall health and boosting our immune systems.  Quality healing spices are one of those items that are rich in several immune boosting compounds that we can easily add into our every day cooking so we can reap the health benefits.  Mace is a rich source of manganese, copper, zinc, iron, potassium, essential oils, magnesium and several vitamins.

The list could go on, but these were my top 5 reasons why mace powder is a powerful and healing spice.  This spice can be an easy substitution for nutmeg (however nutmeg has many health benefits as well!) and has a bit of a sweeter yet milder taste.  This spice is flavorful and delicious when used in soups, broths, omelettes, grain dishes and baked goods. It is also fabulous when making any homemade lattes or teas!

Happy Healing!
